History Rationale

Intent

At St. Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, our History curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding and help children make sense of the world around them. We want pupils to develop a secure awareness of Britain’s past and the wider world, building a clear chronological picture from the earliest civilisations to modern times. Through rich stories, meaningful enquiry and thoughtful discussion, children learn to recognise how people’s lives have shaped our nation, how societies have changed and how history influences their own identity and values today. Our intent is to nurture confident young historians who think critically, appreciate diversity and understand the complexity of human experiences across time.

Implementation

History is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that allows pupils to build knowledge progressively and revisit important concepts as they move through the school. Each unit is chosen to strengthen children’s chronological understanding, develop their use of historical vocabulary and deepen their ability to ask and answer thoughtful questions. Teachers use a wide range of sources, artefacts, stories and local Liverpool history to bring the past to life, helping pupils understand how historical knowledge is constructed and interpreted. Enquiry-led lessons, educational visits and cross-curricular links enrich learning and ensure that all pupils, including those with additional needs, can access and enjoy History. Our approach encourages children to explore cause and consequence, similarity and difference and significance in ways that feel relevant, engaging and connected to their wider learning.

Impact

We believe our children will:

• develop a coherent understanding of key periods in British, local and world history and be able to place major events confidently on a timeline.
• be able to think critically, weigh evidence and form balanced judgements about the past, using historical concepts to explain change, continuity and diversity.
• understand how society has evolved over time and how historical events continue to shape the present.
• leave us with curiosity, perspective and a sense of connection, being able to compare their own lives with those who came before them and equipped with the historical understanding needed to contribute thoughtfully to the world around them.
