Intent

At St Cuthbert’s, we believe mathematics is an essential life skill that enables children to understand and make sense of the world around them. We aim to inspire a love of mathematics by providing an ambitious, engaging and inclusive curriculum that equips every child with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed both in school and beyond.

Our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by a mastery approach and the belief that every child can achieve. It is carefully sequenced to develop secure conceptual understanding, enabling children to make connections between mathematical ideas and apply their learning with confidence. We place equal importance on developing fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving, ensuring children are able to think critically, justify their ideas and tackle increasingly complex challenges with resilience.

We recognise the importance of oracy within mathematics and provide regular opportunities for children to explain their thinking, articulate their reasoning, use precise mathematical vocabulary and engage in purposeful mathematical discussion. By encouraging children to talk about mathematics, question, justify and challenge ideas, they develop a deeper understanding of concepts and become confident, reflective mathematicians. Through rich mathematical experiences and meaningful real-life contexts, we strive to develop curious, independent learners who appreciate the beauty, power and relevance of mathematics in everyday life and leave our schools as confident, life-long mathematicians.

Implementation

Mathematics is taught through daily, carefully planned lessons that follow a mastery approach, ensuring learning is progressive, coherent and builds upon prior knowledge. Lessons are designed to develop deep conceptual understanding alongside fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, with opportunities for children to revisit and consolidate learning through regular retrieval and basic skills practice.

High-quality teaching focuses on the use of mathematical representations, practical resources and carefully sequenced small steps to ensure all children can access new learning. Teachers use skilled questioning and ongoing assessment to adapt teaching, providing appropriate support and challenge so that every child can succeed. Oracy is embedded throughout mathematics lessons. Children are encouraged to explain their methods, justify their reasoning, discuss different strategies, identify patterns and make mathematical connections using accurate mathematical vocabulary. Collaborative learning and mathematical discussion enable children to deepen their understanding, challenge misconceptions and become confident communicators.

Children are given regular opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge across the wider curriculum and in meaningful real-life contexts, helping them recognise the relevance of mathematics beyond the classroom. Through investigations, practical activities and whole-school enrichment opportunities, children experience mathematics as a creative and purposeful subject.

We ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, developing secure conceptual understanding and efficient recall of key facts;
