We are proud to deliver Read Write Inc. as our early reading and phonics programme.
Read Write Inc. is a highly successful, systematic phonics programme that teaches children to read with confidence, accuracy and fluency. From the very beginning, children learn to recognise sounds, blend them together to read words, and develop the skills they need to become enthusiastic, lifelong readers.
At St. Cuthbert’s, Read Write Inc. is used to teach phonics from Reception through to Year 2, providing children with a strong foundation in early reading, spelling and writing. The programme is carefully structured to ensure that every child makes excellent progress and receives the support or challenge they need to succeed.
Throughout the programme the children:
- Learn how to pronounce the 44 sounds (single letters, groups of letters) in the English language
- Learn how to form letters correctly using child-friendly patters e.g. Maisie, mountain, mountain for âmâ
- Learn to read tricky/red words by sight recognition
- Learn how to blend sounds together in order to read e.g. d-o-g becomes dog
- Read a hand-picked selection of a range of fiction and non-fiction books independently and with a reading partner
- Learn how to pronounce and therefore accurately blend âsilly friendsâ e.g. br, sl, scr
- Develop their comprehension skills through careful and age-appropriate questioning
