“For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.” – Matthew 18:20

At Stâ€Ŋ.Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School, prayer and liturgy lie at the heart of our daily life, shaping our identity as a community centred on Jesus Christ. In accordance with the Prayer & Liturgy Directory, we provide age‑appropriate opportunities for pupils and staff to gather in prayer, listen to God’s word, respond in faith and live out the Gospel in their daily lives. Our worship is rooted in the belief that Christ is present whenever we pray together — in the scriptures proclaimed, in the community gathered and in the movement of the Holy Spirit drawing us into unity.

We understand prayer as “lifting up of hearts and minds to God,” involving the whole person — head and heart — and helping pupils recognise God’s action in their lives. All forms of prayer and liturgy in school follow the four‑fold pattern of Gather – Listen – Respond – Send, enabling all pupils to participate meaningfully and progressively. Scripture is always included, whether through a short Gospel sentence, a psalm verse, or a fuller reading, reflecting the Directory’s teaching that the proclamation of scripture is central to all Celebrations of the Word.

Daily prayer provides every child with time for silence, reflection, and wonder — helping them contemplate the mystery of God, the joys and challenges of life, and their place within the wider human family. In this way, pupils learn that prayer and liturgy are not simply school routines but encounters with Christ that shape their choices, relationships and growing sense of vocation.

Our approach is inclusive and respectful of the diverse religious backgrounds within our school community. All pupils are invited to be present, to listen, to reflect and to support the prayer of others, giving all involved a shared sense of belonging as we recognise that, in our worship, ‘We are one body in Christ’.
